Repent and ye shall be saved!!!
Okay, so I have thought about the post I wrote last year about “solutions to the problems” a lot. When I wrote it I thought I had made it clear enough that I had meant tribal kings with a place for anarchy and that I was not talking about revisting the old outdated monarchies of Europe. Apparently I have not clarified that enough and it saddens me because I feel it has overshadowed the entire post about other solutions that are indisputably good ones. I have gotten more feedback about that post than any other and it has been negative. I realize that such an idea could be considered unpatriotic at best, but you are talking to a person who not only was born on the fourth of July, but also has an Uncle Sam (I’m not kidding). Patriotism is something that has been imbued in every fiber of my being since birth and fundamentally that is why I started writing this. Because I love my country, I started writing about the things I have seen threatening it. As to my thoughts on government I do not agree with the system we have in place. But that does not make me a traitor. Dissent is the highest form of Patriotism. I would die to defend my neighbors and fellow countrymen, and it is hurtful to know that people think less of me and my ideas because they are so different. Therefore, I am separating the post in question. I am omitting any mention of government and will be creating a separate post devoted to that subject after I finish the magical series I am working on, because it does tie into it. It has over shadowed the entire blog, things that definately should not be missed. You will also note that I finally finished the mining section. Anyway I made a mistake putting a revolutionary idea like that in the way that I did. I am not talking about really anything that has even been seen before and it was stupid of me to slip it in like that to let people’s preconcieved notions run rampant. So it back to the drawing board for me:)
Misleading the sheeple, once again

So something else I have noticed lately. The powers that be I guess are trying to discourage any more people from liberating themselves from the herd. I was talking to my father about the fact that I really don’t see any hippys down here in Madison any more. The place used to be lousy with them a few years ago (I can say that because I consider myself to be one). My dad said that he just read an article saying the “neo-hippy” movement was dead. I don’t know what publication it was but it apparently said that everybody decided to get real and get jobs or whatever. My take on that considering in Wausau I know plenty of “hippies” is that it’s some sort of media blitz to discredit us and discourage people from joining the ranks if you will. Then the other day I was reading my latest issue of Smithsonian and it was talking about the fact that biofuels may be all fluff because of the fact that people haven’t taken into account that the corn that is used to make ethanol, used to be feeding people and it’s making the price of corn rise which will ripple throught the economy. I have never been on board with ethanol for the reason that it is one more load on already overloaded and mismanaged farm land (see my post “Wisdom in food choices”. But they neglected to mention much if anything at all about biodiesel which is made from waste fryer oil, leaving the reader with the impression that the whole idea of biofuels is a bad idea. Again misleading people. Finally as I write this I am reminded of something I saw in the Wausau City Pages probably about a year ago now. It was a front page headline saying “Is renewable energy really a solution” or something like that. But when you turned the page that it was listed as being on, no article. Nowhere in the paper was that article. So people as they walk by had that thought put in their head. I am deeply angry at this trend I am seeing and it shows to me just how deeply imbedded in our media big oil and energy are. Doubt unfortunately is a powerful thing, and they are using it to undermine the visionaries and ideas that are going to solve the problems of our age. Make no mistake renewable energy and biofuels are a solution, maybe not the entire one, but a piece of the puzzle none the less. The rest of the solution is burning these greedy corporate executives at the stake, in a fire fueled by their beloved oil.
There is no such thing as coincidence
So I moved to madison, kind of a bizarre twist on things at the last second, but it seems there is a fate behind it. All the things I have written about in the last year, I am now witnessing first hand the root of it all. I do not know what I am going to to do yet, but you better believe I will not sit idly by as my beloved land gets pieced up and destroyed. I have two things for you to ponder that sum up what is going on down here the best. The first is Piason’s. Those of you that know anything about Madison will know what I am talking about but for those of you that don’t it is a very old restuarant near state street, near the UW. My father went to it when he went to school here in 1952. It had an amazing atmosphere, very queit very cozy and intimate, with latticework booths and hardwoods floors. The university tore it down two years ago. They now opened an ultra ritzy Piason’s a few blocks away. A large chunk of the UW’s soul was detroyed with that building, because Piason’s wasn’t known for it’s food, but for it’s history and atmosphere. The other thing for you to reflect on is Freakfest/State street. The place was shut down with cops for freakfest this weekend. A few years ago a riot broke out and things turned nasty. Well the place went on complete lockdown this year. There were cops and private security guys everywhere. State street, on of the last bastions of free, progressive, dare I say hippy thought, shut down and swarming with cops. What was the real reason that riot broke out? Wisconsin has one of the best and respected university systems in the country, and state government has been selling it out, forcing it to cut back on itself. Madison is losing it’s soul. So that’s why I was brought down here. I guess it is time to start kicking some corporate lobby ass.
Local Issues
The first thing that comes to my mind is the Scott Street Steak and Pub in Wausau. For those of you that dont know, the Pub is approximately 100 years old, and is a fixture in downtown Wausau. It is a piece of history. The community development authority in town here bought it and wants to tear it down to build a parking ramp for Dudley Tower, a “skyscraper’ that was thrown up in haste that nobody really wanted either except for a few rich bigwigs. Now mind you, if this parking ramp is built, as you face north, there will be three parking ramps in a row. If we are trying to build charm and character to make Wausau stand out, this is not the way to do it. They used underhanded manuvering to pressure the Pub into closing. Such as using their connections in the local paper to print articles saying it was on it’s last legs when it wasn’t, so that people wouldn’t go and the place would be forced to shut down and sell. Such as revoking their liqour license with no good explanation as to why (there has never been any problems with Scott Street obeying the law). I went to the last night it was open, June 30, and watched as at midnight the cops came in and shut the place down because the liquor license expired at midnight. They couldn’t even let the place stay open the extra two hours to have the final act, the headlining band, Corpse Show Creeps, play. What little media coverage there was of this entirely failed to mention it was almost a riot when the police showed up. There was heckling of the cops, such as people yelling “you guys are corrupt” and “fuck the police”. People didn’t move until they announced that the party would be moving to the PI, another bar in town. But they didn’t mention people’s anger. What were they worried people might take a cue from that? Revolution is simmering, and trying to hide the truth is only going to make it worse. Or did they want to give the illusion that nobody cared and further twist the truth to their own advantage? I don’t know, but there is something seriously wrong in our world that such history is thrown away like trash.
Wausau has changed so rapidly in the last three years that we are beginning to lose our sense of identity and Scott Street is the poster child of this. All over this country it is happening because big corporations are franchising their way into every town, buying out the little guy and destroying the local economy. I want to cry that Scott Street is now closed because it was such a cultural anchor for Wausau(the only decent sized stage for local music to play), there are few things left in Wausau now that have that kind of history, those kind of memories. See Wausau is a town with a lot of ignorant people, ignoramuses who have no idea of the value of history and what folly it is to destroy it. My father used to make the comment that people are born here, go to college (if they are lucky) within 60 miles of here and die here, never ever seeing the world that lies beyond Wisconsin (I sometimes wonder if that has something to do with the whole magnet theory I posed in the ELF section) I want to tear my hair out in sheer fustration at the stupidity that runs rampant around here. This lack of experience is what is doing Wausau in. All these idiots watch their TV and see all the shiny new crap that is held in front of them and they want it, totally clueless to the fact that all things come at a price and that progress rarely ever is truly moving in the right direction. I have lived in Cleveland, D.C., and Phoenix and I can tell you that there is a very dark side to progress. The poverty of the disenfranchised, the decay, the crime, the pollution, the destruction of nature. That is why I settled in Wausau because in 1996 when I came here it was 20 years behind the rest of the world. The land was pristine, the water was pristine(the lakes and stuff up north were, sadly the river was severely polluted by the time I moved here, but that has to do with the fact the Wisconsin River is the most heavily dammed river in the country and as such, it cannot naturally cleanse itself), this place was peaceful and extraordinarily beautiful. What is coming is going to totally destroy this town. But again it is only history repeating itself and that is my whole point, those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. Scott Street stands a as testament to what founded this town. Lumber Barons, who chopped down trees that were the size of the California redwoods, but only they were pine trees. People who could only view the land in terms of how much they could profit from it. This is NOT what we want to attract to Wausau. This land is doomed to have the same injustices repeated until someone conciously stops it. I am reminded of an article I read about the super bowl in Detriot a few years back, where they made the comment of catering to outside wealth. Wausau is doing that and I have some very dire warnings about it. It began when the Rib Mtn Ski hill was sold. Mind you this ski hill shares the mountain with Rib Mtn state park, and so conservation should be at the top of list of priorities. They changed the name to “Granite Peak” and started cutting down trees on Rib Mountain to build more runs (they are still building more). The sheer arrogance of it appalls me, and again it is looking at the land in terms of how much money can be made from it. I used to be able to rent a snowboard and boots and get a day pass for the lift for 30 bucks, it now costs 140. Then the drug dealers started coming up from Chicago and Milwaukee and the crime started. Then they started building. The mall got sold to a company out of Ohio and I’m sorry but I have nothing good to say about Ohio, and this company has only proved my point. They are tearing up downtown with their God-forsaken greed. I think 50% of downtown Wausau is now new, and it is construction that caters to outsiders as opposed to providing the people of this town with what they would want. There was a referendum that failed a few years ago about a convention center/hotel downtown. People did not want it. But hey, somehow we got a hotel anyway, the Jefferson Street Inn. Isn’t that interesting? I know that something needed to be done to revitalize the area but this is not it. I have to point out that you never know in this town when city council meetings are. They don’t advertise them in anyway shape or form. The only place they do advertise is on the public access channel, but the bulletins from there are always three months behind. I swear to God it’s like a private club that they don’t want you to know about. They make it as hard as possible to have a voice in the decisions made in Wausau. As far as I am concerned that is corruption right there. They do not want us to know what is going on because they are doing something they know they aren’t supposed to be. And now, quite predictably, the crime is coming to a head, just a few weeks ago a man shot at an officer during a routine traffic stop. I believe that is the first time something like that has ever happened here. Outside wealth is like the Kraken of Greek mythology. They will devour anything of beauty until all that is left is their own grotesque hulk, and then they will move on. They will destroy this place, they already are. I am angry at the corporations (and I mean the government when I say that as well, they are the biggest corporation of all) but I am angry also at the intelligent creative people who used to live here that abandoned this town because they thought it wasn’t cool enough. You are just as guilty as the one’s who are destroying this place because you do not recognize the value of roots, knowing who you are and where you’re from. I stayed here because I knew what would eventually come, and I knew that this was the place to draw the line. Wausau is the gateway to the Northwoods, and it is the perfect position of strength from which to defend it. I love this town and I would die to protect it, but its kind of hard to do anything when I cannot even see my enemy, because he hides behind a veil of wealth and priviledge.
Excuse me for a moment because I need to digress. I hate rich people and I come from a very old and honorable family so I can say that, it’s not just sour grapes. My family still has a family estate in Rhode Island from when my great grandfather eight times removed was Royal governor of Rhode Island and was reelected to that position even after the American Revolution, and our family still has an ancestral castle, Ferniehirst Castle in the Scottish lowlands. There is great responsibility that comes with great power, and as such, great wealth. I was raised with this notion of service my whole life and anybody who comes from , or studies such backgrounds will know what I mean. Those who earned their money in a capitalist society certainly do not have the same code of ethics. I went to best of the best private schools my whole life, and learned far more than what I wanted to about how the other half lives (the so called better half) They are bastards. They got that way because they stepped on the backs of their workers, because they were selfish and arrogant. Those who have been given more have a duty to use that in the service of others, a message that is entirely lost on the ruling class of our country. All I have to say is remember the French Revolution? Well it can happen again, and it’s closer to that than you realize, so keep wallowing in your filthy money and power, see where it gets you. You show your true colors by even having such wealth in such horrible times. There are people dying in the streets. if you were worth the air that you breathe you would give away your money and your time, as I have, in an earnest effort to help those in need. Instead though you hide in your gated communities and buy politicians to pass laws that make you even richer, instead of fixing the social woes that face our society. Again that is exactly what happened in the french revolution, the nobility just hid in their houses and hid behind their power. People are losing respect for the government and this is why. The government is run buy corporations. Wealthy corporations that are still trying to make even more money. Those who have the money have the power, and if you don’t have money then well your a lazy second class citizen who doesn’t deserve a voice anyway. I’m sorry but some people actually have a concious. Your sugar and your mind control have not conquered everyone. The Arrowhead Weston line is another example of this. They built the powerline anyway that nobody wanted, tearing up the countryside to build Weston 4, another coal fired plant that going to further dirty our air all so American Transmission Company and Wisconsin Public Service can make their investors a tidy profit. They plan on building a Weston 5 and a Weston 6. When does this stop? These people are coming here because they destroyed where they were living and have nothing left so now they are going to come up here and consume until there is nothing left here. All I have to ask you rich bastards is at the the end of the day does that fat wad of cash keep you warm at night, does it keep you from going mad when you look at yourself in the mirror and realize what a monster you are? Or do you even feel anymore, did you sell that out as well when you sold out your integrity? Your comuppance will come and I will be dancing in the streets when it does. Wake up people before it is too late!!!
Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) and other fun things
Another member of Forward Wisconsin is Xcel energy. Xcel energy bought the Lake Superior District Power Company, which used to be the power company in northwest Wisconsin where ATC’s Arrowhead-Weston line passes through. That power company use to feed to the Navy’s Clam Lake ELF transmitter, which is right smack dab in the middle of the biggest part of the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest. Project Sanguine and, as it was later called in it’s scaled down version, Project Seafarer were undertaken by the Navy to develop submarine communications from land. Due to the conductively and salinity of seawater, higher frequencies cannot penetrate. ELF however or extremely low frequency uses radio waves in the extremely low frequencies of three to thirty megahertz. It literally uses the earth as an attenna and it’s signals can be heard all over the globe. ELF has a very very slow data transmission rate. The U.S. is not the only one to have developed this technology, Russia calls them Zevs and other countries have them too. http://www.vlf.it/zevs/zevs.htm The Clam Lake site and the other site in Republic MI (in the upper peninsula of michigan and also part of the Upper Great Lakes Keystone Forest) were chosen because of the low conductivy bedrock in the area. Thing is that area also sits on a gigantic plate of iron (hence mining issues in the area). During the operation of the Clam Lake site until 2004 when it was supposedly shut down, there were reports of people getting shocked in their bath tubs, fences becoming electrified when they weren’t supposed to be and shocks coming from bathroom fixtures. You can magnetize something by exposing it to electricity if I’m not mistaken, and for the last 30 years the government has been sending low frequency electricity through the ground which is a gigantic iron magnet on which the Upper Great Lakes Keystone Forest sits. I have several problems with this. The first is that ELF is the frequencies between 3 to 30 Mhz. I already said that, but here’s the deal. The human brain operates at the frequencies of 13-14Mhz during concious states, 8 Mhz during meditation and 4 Mhz while sleeping. There is such a thing as sympathetic vibrations that occur when frequencies match and the brain is no different. Brain waves are ELF waves. There is a possibility for mind control that exists with this. Anyone skeptical or interested in the subject should pick up a copy of the 1971 book “Physical Control of the Mind: Toward a Psychocivilized Society” by Jose M. Delgado. My next problem with this is it is part of the nuclear program of our defence department. It is a weapon of war. If the proverbial shit ever hits the fan, this is a legitimate military target sitting right in my backyard. Finally, there are metaphysical ramifications of this. The town of Hurley sits almost directly in between Clam Lake and Republic in the middle of the forest on top of the deposit of iron. A fellow clairvoyant friend of mine and I have dubbed the last 10 miles of highway going north to Hurley “the Highway to Hell”, because of the amount paranormal stuff we see there. I think every building on Silver Street is haunted in addition to the old hotel up there. The Famous Balding light is only a few miles from Hurley. Those of you familiar with paranormal research will note that electromagnetics figure prominently with paranormal activity.
The ancient Greeks held a belief that the North held special power. The land around here is swamp, in one way shape or form. Northern Wisconsin has a history of sightings of Will-O-Wisps, balls of green swamp energy that float above swamps , they are related to St Elmo’s fire which forms on the mast of ships during electrical storms, that’s in addition to the northern lights in the earths magnetosphere, that shine mostly green up here in the winter. Swamp energy has to do with the concept of death being a transition to new life, it is the alpha and omega on the wheel of life. It is a gateway to whatever lies beyond this life, it something to respect and it has been fundamentally corrupted by the research undergone in Clam Lake and Republic for almost a third of a century in this forest. If all the world can be divided into the divine interplay of the forces of creation and destruction(heterotic universe), and you relize that radiance corresponds with Creation(yang) and magnetism corresponds with destruction (yin), the north is a concentration of magnetic destructive power (this makes sense considering it is closer to one of the Earth’s magnetic poles). Magnetic, “new life from death” swamp energy correlates with black hole energy, energy that I think is in the same frequency as ELF (X-rays, emitted by blackholes are the lowest frequency so I’m pretty sure they correlate). Remember what I posed earlier about the conciousness of the forest being transmuted? The results on a metaphysical level are not good to say the least. I fear some sort of interdimensional rift has been torn in the Northwoods and that it is the explanation for all the creepy stuff going on. That literally a portal to death has been opened. For years I have seen things with my “other eyes” that would make most people run screaming, and when I found out about ELF, it all made perfect sense. Xcel energy now owns at the very least the powerlines that fed the station if not the station itself. There is some form of construction going on at the actual Navy site now, what it is I do not know yet.
The ELF station in Clam Lake is very real proof of the experiments in electromagnetism done by the navy in the last century, amongst which the most notable is the controversial Philadelphia Experiment. In that instance they used incredibly powerful magnets to bend light around the USS Eldrige, a desroyer escort in WWII, in order to render it invisible. The short version of the story is that it actually teleported and when it returned to the Naval Yard in Philadelphia, crew members were either dead, insane, severely nauseous or fused with the metal ship. The layout was supposedly magnetic coils placed on either end of the ship. I have to point out that if one were to look at the map of the Upper Great Lakes Keystone Forest, the two ELF transmitters would sit on the land, just as the coils sat on the USS Eldrige. That work was supposedly based off of work done by Nicoli Tesla. Tesla was a brilliant man. He was revolutionary. In addition to his work with magnetics, he worked with power transport through no conductor, wireless electricity. This involved ionization techniques and vacuum tubes, just like the cathode ray tube in older tvs. The ionization is something the Navy is currently working on in Alaska. In their High frequency Active Auroral Research project, or HAARP, they are currently experimenting with superheating the ionosphere and among other things using it as a means to control weather. I highly suggest you follow this link to watch the documentary on the subject. It is most enlightening http://www.holyhealthy.com/HAARP%20Project%20Documentary%20-%20Holes%20in%20Heaven..wmv HAARP might also be used for mind control as it also generates ELF frequencies.
On the subject of mind control I must digress to television. I hate TV’s, for years I swore up and down that they were mind control devices and now, I have the proof. Both black and white TV’s and color TV’s emit signals in the ELF range, in the range of human brainwaves. It’s the whole sympathetic vibration thing again. But hey don’t take my word for it follow the link and look and the sections of video frequencies and you will see that TV operates on the same frequencies of the unconcious mind, approx 4 Mhz http://www.sencore.com/newsletter/Jan02/JanNews/Understanding%20and%20Measuring%20Part%20I.htm
On a different and related vein, in the 1950’s the government undertook project Pandora, to investgate mysterious sicknesses at the US embassy in Moscow. It turns out the Russians had figured out a way to aim electromagnetic rays at people and literally slowly nuke them. The government knows the effects of electromagnetic radiation on people because they have developed “confusion” weaponry based on that research. Weapons that we are just now beginning to see as declassified prototypes on shows like the History Channel. Remember the neural disruptions I mentioned, slower response time and stress? This deliberately exploits those effects. People can’t think and it makes them mindless dummies in essence, microwaving their brain in the process (makes the guy in the tin foil hat not look so crazy anymore eh?).
People, stress is a response by the brain to leave something alone. If the brain doesn’t know what to do with a given stimulus, something it deems dangerous, anxiety and stress are the response. With the number of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety prescriptions being written going through the roof, and stress so bad that people are killing each other, the fact that electrical equipment causes stress needs to be paid attention to. Look around us, electricity is everywhere. We are immersed in a bath of electricity everywhere we go, from lights, phones, Tvs, microwaves, radio, satellite you name it. Unconciously our brains are telling us to to get the hell away from all this crap, too bad our concious mind doesn’t have the sense to listen.
The point remains that all this technology which people are so fond of (myself included to some extent) have arisen out of research done by the military, whether it be ours or another, research that is still ongoing and aimed at the end of dominance through force, not peace and harmony. There is a concept in electional astrology, that pretty much states that the circumstances governing an event or person or thing at it’s inception, is what will rule it during its entire lifetime. These technologies’ birth was for and during bloodshed and destruction, and that is exactly what they are now doing. I have seen far too much in my life to believe in coincidence anymore. With the increasing rates of depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia, schizophrenia, suicide and the like in this country is it really so crazy to think there may be people actually trying to control people’s minds or make people go nuts to keep their hold on power? Here’s a few more links to peruse:http://stinet.dtic.mil/oai/oai?&verb=getRecord&metadataPrefix=html&identifier=AD0717409http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/189/4197/143

Logging
The biggest threat that the forest faces is logging. Now I understand basic forestry and ecology concepts. There is such a thing as weeding on a large scale that does help the forest, such as removing Popple (Large-Tooth or Quaking Aspen), a tree with poor quality wood that tends to strip the soil depriving other trees of precious nutrients. What is going on far surpasses that though. The CNNF is the most heavily logged forest in the country. It is logged at a rate of 116 million board feet of lumber each year. Between 1992 to 2001, 188,000 acres were logged. At the current rate it is being logged it will be gone in 45 years. The Bush administration, in their infinite wisdom and sagacity (sarcasm people, sarcasm) is opening more than 70,000 acres of the Northwoods to logging and mining. The Forest Service plan that I included a link to in the previous section allows massive logging projects which require construction or reconstruction of over 100 miles of roads in order to provide loggers access to almost 45,000 acres of the CNNF. This is beyond retarded to me because, in addition to all the environmental and moral reasons this is a bad idea, non-timber values in Wisconsin National Forests are ten times that of timber revenues, recreational visitors spend over $1 billion in the Northwoods annually.
Legally there has been a small ray of hope as the Environmental Law and Policy Center contested 3 out the 5 major timber sales by the forestry service and won, saving a significant portion of the 13,000 acres that would have been destroyed (3,000 of those acres would have been clear-cut). The three contested sales were the Howell, the McCaslin and the Cayuga. The Howell and the Cayuga are some of the last forests that are old growth, the final remnants of the mammoth pines (and I mean mammoth, trees that had the diameter of a buick) that used to dominate eighty-five percent of the Northwoods, but now are only two percent of the CNNF. The Howell parcel has one of the largest population of goblin fern, a species that is state endangered and globally rare. It is also in the heart of pine marten habitat, which is also on the Wisconsin endangered species list. The McCaslin contains old growth hardwoods which in turn are ideal habitat for declining populations of goshawks and red-shouldered hawks. It also supports fragile populations of eastern timberwolves and cerulean warblers. The sale of the Cayuga would have destroyed large stands of yellow birch. Yellow birch is not doing so well in Wisconsin National Forests because of the short rotation logging practiced by the Forestry Service. This practice boost the deer population but the deer eat most of the yellow birch seedlings. This is also true for white pine, white cedar and hemlock. Ordinarily large fallen yellow birch trees become nurse log habitats for the next generation seedlings, without this protection the seedlings are quite vulnerable. Fallen yellow birch also reduce fire risk by retaining moisture (there have already been two fires in the forest this year) and they provide habitat for countless insects, fungi and are shelter for wildlife like pine marten, blowing the theory espoused by a lot of the locals around here that deadfall harvesting is not harmful. The Cayuga is also home to fairy shrimp. These little guys are very rare and are found elsewhere only in California and Oregon. They require pools with no other fish and as shrinking natural ecosystems become more crowded these fellows are losing out globally.
The fact that these sales were contested and won does not mean the forest is permanently safe however, pardon the pun but in no way shape or form are we out of the woods. The Northwoods is primarily private or corporate lands. Much of the land is owned by the paper companies and they can do whatever they want with their land. The need for forest products needs to decline so we can starve and destroy these corporations. Our planets survival depends on the fact that we stop cutting down our oxygen supply and the photosynthetic organisms that ‘breathe” the carbon dioxide out of our air. I will not be able to stress enough throughout all the installments I write how gravely important it is we realize how interconnected all life and this planet really are.
Another case in point are beavers. I love beavers, but they are doing too well. Beavers love Popple, which springs up like mad in clear cut areas or where the forest canopy has been opened up to let enough sunlight in. The beavers dam up the trout streams which make the streams too warm for the fish. Over half of the class one trout streams in the CNNF are too warm for brook trout to reproduce now. Too many of a particular creature is as detrimental to an ecosystem as too little. Nature is a delicate balancing act, we must respect this.
Not only do we need to continue fighting deforestation but we need to start actively trying to propagate trees. We know enough about ecology to be able to restore these lands to their natural glory. An idea like the Civilian Conservation Corps should be revisited I feel. Forest stewardship needs to be a the top of our agenda, not something we cut the funding for when money gets tight in our government. Nature heals us. Green is the color of healing, the color of life. Study after study, testamonial after testamonial speaks of the regenerative power of forests. The soothing effect they have on the nerves, the ability they have to allow us to return to ourselves and center ourselves. Honestly, I shouldn’t even have to “sell” this though. The Earth, Nature, is our Mother. We are killing the beautiful Goddess that gave us life, in addition to all her other children. That is the real point in all of this, we are committing murder, and we all have the blood on our hands. The only chance of redemption is to stop this, not because of our survival being threatened, but because it is right thing to do.
An introduction to the forest and it’s history
The “chwam” as it is referred to locally is 1,519,800 acres of old and second growth forest in northern Wisconsin, and is part of the Upper Great lakes Keystone
Forest a.k.a., “the Northwoods”. It is composed of several different ecosystems; uplands, bogs, wetlands, muskegs, rivers, streams, pine savannas, meadow and glacial lakes, black spruce bogs, cedar swamps and alder thickets. It is home to a plethora of flora and fauna. In the tree category there are 3 different kinds of maple, 3 different kinds of oak, aspen, beech basswood, sumac, 3 different kinds of birch, 3 different pine, white spruce and balsam fir and the forest is the eastern most range for the eastern hemlock. Among smaller flora there are blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, service berries ferns, mosses, cattails, mushrooms, the list goes on. Animals that inhabit this area are white tail deer, black bears, foxes, raccoons, rabbits, beavers, otters, squirrels, chipmunks, timber wolves, elk, moose, coyotes, badgers, wolverines and lynx. Birds that dwell here are pheasants, grouse, wild turkey, northern cardinals, blue jays, American crows, American robins, red tailed hawks, red wing blackbird, owls, ducks, loons, bald eagles, thrush, sparrows and warblers. Populating the waters of this primeval paradise are brook trout, rainbow trout and brown trout, walleye, small and large mouth bass, crappie, northern pike and several species of pan fish. Those you familiar with the endangered species list will recognize a few threatened creatures amongst the ones I have just mentioned. The forest is amazing. You have not lived until you’ve camped out on a spring night here and listened to the sound of grouse thumping to attracted mates, the sometimes deafening sound of spring peepers, the eerie laughing of loons in the middle of the night and early morning and seen the night sky look like a million diamonds radiating on black/purple velvet. There is no feeling in the world like watching the sunset over a pristine glacial lake deep in a pine forest and knowing you’re the only human and vestige of “society” for miles around, feeling the unmistakable presence of a wolf watching you, or the sight of two yearling deer frolicking, totally unafraid and uninhibited, or watching the Aurora Borealis on a –30F night in the dead of winter, when it’s so cold the snow crystallizes and it looks as if the whole earth and sky are covered in diamonds. Words do not do the experience justice.
The human history of the forest is an interesting study, it has a deep dark and sadly still very relevant past. The area was severely over logged by the end of the 19th century by the lumber and mining barons who founded this area. During the days of prohibition it was also home to many mobsters including Al Capone. One of the most prominent cities in the area at the time, Hurley, which was and is a mining town, was a hotbed of crime including forced prostitution, trafficking and murder. I have stayed in the apartments above the old clubs where this stuff went on and the area defines the word haunted. I have a theory about such things, issues in the present often have deep roots in the past, old injustices or cover-ups that people forget about. Thing is the land and the spirits of our ancestors that dwell on the energies of the land do not forget. It is plagued by the lingering energies of past crimes, dooming itself to have the same injustices and wrongs repeated until someone figures it out and stops it. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. When the land became useless to those exploiting it, it was sold off to poor immigrants hoping to farm it. Well Northwoods soil is not meant for farming as anyone who lives here can attest to and these poor people found it out the hard way. They ended up going bankrupt and selling their land to the federal government. In March of 1933 Herbert Hoover established the Nicolet
National forest and soon after in November of that year FDR established the Chequamegon National Forest. It was combined and managed as one in 1993. Chequamegon is an Ojibway word meaning place of shallow water, and Nicolet is after Jean Nicolet a French explorer and fur trader who came to great lakes area in the 1600’s. The Civilian Conservation Corps came through in the 1930’s and replanted the land with native trees and a lot of the forest is second growth from that planting effort. However, under the loosening of restrictions and undermining of environmental law by the Bush administration, severe mismanagement by the Forest Service, and some severely underhanded maneuvering by corporations (corporations that also have deep roots in the past) the CNNF faces many diverse but fundamentally linked critical threats. For your perusal I have included a link to the forestry service’s plan for the CNNF.
